MedAssurant's MORE2 Registry Used to Explore Optimal Treatment Approaches for Colorectal Cancer and IBD
Two Research Presentations at Digestive Disease Week 2011 Feature Data Extracted from the AGA Digestive Health Outcomes Registry™ Powered by MedAssurant’s Proprietary Datasets
BOWIE, Md. – May 10, 2011 – MedAssurant, Inc., a leading provider of data-driven healthcare solutions, today announced that data from its Medical Outcomes for Research on Economics and Effectiveness (MORE2) Registry exploring the optimal treatment approaches for colorectal cancer (CRC) and irritable bowel disease (IBD) were presented at Digestive Disease Week (DDW) 2011 in Chicago. The MORE2 Registry is a proprietary database containing 4.5 billion health care events from 77 million unique de-identified members distributed throughout the U.S.
Two research presentations featured data extracted from the AGA Digestive Health Outcomes Registry (AGA Registry), a database derived from MedAssurant’s MORE2 Registry and sponsored by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA). One analysis compared clinical outcomes for colonoscopy when sedation was performed with and without a professional anesthesiologist, and the other examined the utility of a predictive model for identifying the optimal implementation of biologic agents for the treatment of IBD.
The Presence of Anesthesiology Professional Services During Colonoscopy Is Associated with Increased Polyp-Polyp Detection Rates and Decreased Reduction of Colorectal Cancer: a Medical Outcomes Registry Analysis
The data demonstrated that the PDR was significantly greater and that CRC incidence was significantly lower in both men and women who underwent anesthesiologist-administered sedation. However, the absolute differences between the groups were small despite being statistically significant.
“Our findings show that the presence of a professional anesthesiologist during colonoscopy has a positive effect on the detection of adenomatous polyps,” said Joseph Lynch, RN, CPHQ, senior director of registry operations of MedAssurant. “This result gives us a better understanding of the cost-benefit difference between sedation approaches during an examination.”
Use of the AGA Registry to Provide Evidence for a Predictive Model for the Optimal Implementation of Biologic Agents and Its Effect on Outcomes in IBD
Data from approximately 160,000 patients with IBD extracted from the AGA Registry were used to examine the utility of a predictive model for using certain individual patient characteristics to determine the optimal course of therapy for the treatment of IBD.
The findings indicated that therapy regimens resembling step-up therapy, as well as other patient characteristics, were associated with a higher likelihood of colonoscopy or hospitalization when compared with the top-down approach.
“These results confirm that a predictive model using a health data super-set has utility in the identification of the most beneficial treatment approach for patients with IBD,” said Joseph Lynch, RN, CPHQ, senior director of registry operations of MedAssurant. “Using our initial findings, we plan to develop this model further, taking into account other variables that may contribute to positive clinical outcomes. This evidence also supports the development of predictive models based on health data super-sets identifying optimal treatment approaches for other disease types as well.”
Largest GI Data Registry
The AGA Registry is built on MedAssurant’s MORE2 Registry. One of the industry’s most sophisticated research datasets, the MORE2 Registry enabled the AGA Registry to launch with an unprecedented depth and breadth of clinical insight – already including extensive data on more than 4 million colonoscopy screenings and over 300,000 IBD cases.
The data allow for retrospective and prospective benchmarking, as well as a basis for immediate outcomes research. Participating clinicians can run, on-demand, performance measure reports in near real-time and receive quarterly practice benchmark reports with national, practice, peer, and personal benchmarks for internal and external quality reporting.
