Data from MedAssurant’s MORE2 Registry™ Enables Comparative Effectiveness Research Into Antipsychotics Dosing for the Treatment of Schizophrenia
Results Presentation Featured at 16th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research
BOWIE, Md. – May 25, 2011 – MedAssurant, Inc., a leading provider of data-driven healthcare solutions, today announced results of a comparative effectiveness research study examining antipsychotics dosing in the treatment of schizophrenia. The study, empowered by data from MedAssurant’s Medical Outcomes for Research on Economics and Effectiveness (MORE2) Registry, were presented at the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) 16th Annual International Meeting in Baltimore, Md. The findings have also been published in the ISPOR Outcomes Research Digest.
In a research presentation entitled “Comparison of the Risperidone Equivalent Doses for the 9 Most Frequent Typical and Atypical Antipsychotics in Patients Diagnosed with Schizophrenia Based on Product Labels with Actual Dosages Prescribed in a Large National Database,” the authors compared approved labeling dosage recommendations for the top 10 frequently prescribed antipsychotic medications for the treatment of schizophrenia with actual prescription data for 324,724 patients extracted from MedAssurant’s MORE2 Registry. Using a therapeutic dosing equivalency conversion table, the authors found that doses equivalent to 1 mg/d of Risperidone ranged from 92.28 mg/d for Clozapine to 1/12 mg/d for Paliperidone making it easier for clinicians and researchers alike to see actual usage and results in practice across the United States.
“Dosage decisions made by physicians are often based on experience and are not always consistent with a drug’s labeled dosage recommendation,” said Alexis Parente, a Health Services Researcher at MedAssurant and lead author of the research presentation. “Combine this with the fact that the number and variety of differentially-dosed pharmacological agents for the treatment of diseases such as schizophrenia continues to rise, and it becomes clear that physicians and clinical outcomes researchers are faced with the challenge of effectively comparing the costs and benefits of various treatment options. Through this analysis, we show that real-world prescribing data from a large administrative claims database can be used to better understand the pharmacoeconomic implications of different therapeutic approaches.”
MedAssurant’s Health Services Researchers Ray Wang, MS and Barton Jones, MS were co-authors of the research presentation.
